Buddhism is one of the religions of the Indian subcontinent and teaches the different
practices of spiritual development, meditation, and philosophy. Buddhism is based
on the teachings of Gautama Buddha. It arose from the Magadha area and
spread throughout India even beyond by Siddhartha Gautama or the Buddha
and its followers. When thinking of religion in India, Hinduism readily comes to
mind. Buddhism lays emphasis on nonviolence and the sanctity of animal life
and teaches even more than that.

HEMIS MONASTERY -LADAKH

The Hemis Monastery is a Himalayan Buddhist Monastery. It is considered to be
one of the largest Buddhist monasteries and most famous monastery in India.
Hemis gompa is located in Ladakh and has a rich collection of ancient remnants.
People also celebrate Hemis festival and dedicate it to their lord by their dance
performance and other rituals.

MINDROLLING MONASTERY, DEHRADUN, UTTARAKHAND

Mindrolling Monastery is one of the major monasteries in Tibet. It was
re-established in India in 1976 and has since grown to be a recognized center of
learning, with one of the largest Buddhist institutes in India. The Great Stupa,
opened in 2002, will be of most interest to visitors.

GHUM MONASTERY -DARJEELING

The Ghum Monastery is situated at the hill regions of Eastern Himalaya range in
Darjeeling, West Bengal. People who believe in spiritual places should also visit
this monastery. We can learn a lot about Buddhism and its teachings just by going
to any such place which will leave a great positive impact on our lives.
BODHIMANDA VIHARA MONASTERY -BODHGAYA
Bodhimanda Vihara is also known as Mahabodhi Temple and is considered to be
the main monastery of Bodh Gaya. This temple is located in Gaya district of Bihar
state where the Buddha has attained enlightenment, It’s now a UNESCO World

Heritage Site. Bodh Gaya is one of the four most important pilgrimage sites of
Buddhists.

NAMDROLING MONASTERY AND GOLDEN TEMPLE, KARNATAKA

If you can’t make it to the mountains to visit any of the Buddhist monasteries in
India, Namdroling Nyingmapa Tibetan Monastery and Golden Temple in south
India is worth visiting.  The amount of gold in the prayer hall and temple is quite
overwhelming, as too are the immense gold statues of Buddha.
