AMAZING FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CORAL REEFS

If you have ever dived into an ocean, you might know many things about the underwater world and its extraordinary beauty which is more enhanced by the coral reefs present inside it. Did you ever have a curiosity to know facts about these beautiful reefs present in the underwater? Here are few facts other than general that you might not know about them!

Coral reefs are among the most biodiverse ecosystem on the planet. Also called ‘rainforest of the sea’, it covers less than 1 % of the ocean and is home to almost 25% of marine species. They also help in making the water clean just like a purifying system. Isn’t that amazing? They do this by filtering out things floating in the ocean which leads to cleaner water. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef in the world. It is so large that it can be seen from the outer space as well. Most reefs are home to more than 600 species of fish and some reefs have species of fishes more than the birds found in the world. Have you ever wondered why the coral reefs are so colorful? Well, it’s because of the algae usually present in it. If you ever see a white coral underwater it’s because of coral bleaching!  It occurs due to warmer water temperature caused by climate change.  The most astonishing fact to know about them is that they are animals, not plants. If you ever find a broken of coral on the beach with a hard shell, it’s actually an animal. Cluster of these animals gives coral its original shape. Coral reef grows at it best in regions where there are stronger currents and wave patterns. It is because stronger currents and wave pattern deliver more food to the marine ecosystem.  I am sure you must be amazed by now.
