High school dropout to Travel blogger: Story of Tarun Gahlawat

Tarun Gahlawat, a young boy hailing from a small village in Haryana’s Sonepat, received a shock when he could not pass his high school examination. As he tried to make amends by helping his father manage the dairy business, he realized that this was not the path he was supposed to tread.

Confused and dejected, Tarun stumbled upon various travel bloggers’ profile on social media platforms like Instagram and Youtube. He was immediately attracted to this previously unknown career option.

Within the next few months, he was running his own travel blog on Instagram and Youtube. Over the years, Tarun – who goes by the name wanderlustguyfilms – has traveled to a number of places and documented his adventures.

Today he boasts of a strong following of more than 14,000 on Instagram. He shares some insights on travel blogging and anecdotes from his own journey.

Inspiring others

The best part of his job, he says, is that the followers connect with him on Instagram whenever he posts a new photograph and they feel inspired to travel to those places. “They ask me a lot of questions about the places I visit and tell me how my photos inspire them to visit those places. So, the connection my audience build with my content is totally different,” he adds.

Social media and travel

Talking about Instagram and other social media platforms, Tarun asserts that the rise of this new technology has helped many individuals in realizing their dreams. He adds that those who are not able to travel to far-off places also enjoy following the travel blogs and that is why it is a huge success.

Hardwork and problems

“The people do not understand the kind of effort that goes into producing a single photograph or video,” Tarun says as he talks about the downsides of being an Instagram influencer. He adds that the follower base is tilted in favour of women travelers for various reasons which sometimes demoralizes others. However, he continues to put in the same amount of effort to create his content and expects that good quality is recognized and rewarded on social media.
