Indians do not need to spend exorbitantly on quinoa, chia seeds, olive oil, and dark chocolate to maintain good health. We can avail such benefits from foods found in kitchens of every Indian home.

There are food items with the perfect amount of flavonoids— which are anti-inflammatory compounds and are found in plant-based foods like blueberries, kale and apples — and protect against cancer and heart disease. These are useful especially for smokers and heavy drinkers, as per a new research.

The aforementioned compounds can be found in large amounts in tea, coffee, apples, guava, terminalia bark (arjuna, Combretaceae family), and fenugreek (methi) seeds. It can also be found in mustard seeds, cinnamon, garlic, jamun, red chilli powder, cloves, and turmeric. All these food items have large amounts of flavonoids (more than 100 mg /100 gm).

We now take a look at food items which have medium amounts of flavonoids (50-100 mg per 100 gm). These are Indian gooseberry (amla), omum (ajwain), cumin (jeera), cardamom (ilaichi), betel leaf, and brandy. Also, small amounts can be found in kidney beans (rajma), soyabeans, ginger, grapes, coriander powder, and brinjal.

It needs to be mentioned here that flavonoids protect against heart disease as it improves the functioning of the blood vessels significantly as well as improves the bioavailability of nitric oxide. Also, it helps control blood pressure, inflammation, cholesterol level, and triglycerides levels.

Well, it should be put on record here that these foods, for all the benefits, do not counteract the risks which come from smoking and high alcohol consumption. So we recommend the folks out there to quit smoking and put that bottle away in order to be healthy.
