Exercise can counter effects of jet lag and shift-based work on body clock, suggests new study

According to the findings of the study, which has been published in the Journal of Physiology, the effects of jet lag and shift-based work on the body’s internal clock can be countered by exercising at proper times.

A new study conducted by a research team from Arizona State University shows that doing exercise can help the human body to cope with jet lag and shift-based work by adjusting the human body clock.

The study suggests that exercise can shift the human body clock. What matters the most is at what time does one exercise.

According to the study, the body clock can be advanced to an earlier time if we exercise at 7 am or between 1 and 4 pm. However, if we exercise between 7 and 10 pm, then our body clock gets delayed to a later time.

The body clock showed little change when participants of the study exercised between 1 and 4 am and at 10 am.

“Exercise has been known to cause changes to our body clock. We were able to clearly show in this study when exercise delays the body clock and when it advances it,” lead author Shawn Youngstedt was quoted as saying in a media report.

“This is the first study to compare exercise’s effects on the body clock, and could open up the possibility of using exercise to help counter the negative effects of jet lag and shift work.”

According to the findings of the study, which has been published in the Journal of Physiology, the effects of jet lag and shift-based work on the body’s internal clock can be countered by exercising at proper times.

To conduct the study, 101 participants were asked to exercise for five and a half days and their body clocks were examined during this period.

To decide what the baseline timing of the body clock of each participant is, the researchers collected their urine samples every 90 minutes. The urine test is done to measure the time of the evening rise in melatonin and the peak of melatonin several hours later.
