Eating fruits can improve mental health, new research shows

A new study published in the Journal of Social Science & Medicine has shown that eating lots of fruits is directly related to having a good mental health.

That fruits and vegetables come with a lot of benefits for one’s physical health is a known fact, but not many people know that eating fresh fruits and vegetables is also great for an individual’s mental well-being.

A recent study has shown that eating fruits and vegetables can benefit the psychological well-being of human beings. The study is based on a direct connection between the number of fruits and vegetables consumed by a person with his or her personal well-being.

According to the research, if a person is eating just one extra portion of fruits and vegetables every day, it can have the same effect on his mental well-being that walking for 8 days extra every month will have.

The findings of the research have been published in the Journal of Social Science & Medicine. According to the lead author of the research Peter Howley, the research has clearly shown that eating fruits and vegetables is directly related to having good mental health.

“It’s well-established that eating fruits and vegetables can benefit physical health. Recently, newer studies have suggested that it may also benefit psychological well-being,” ANI quoted Howley as saying.

According to the research, eating more fruits and vegetables is also directly proportional to having a greater feeling of satisfaction in life. Howley says that the research was done on the basis of a big sample and that it clearly showed that consuming more fruits and vegetables was directly linked to good mental health.

“Our research builds on previous work in Australia and New Zealand by verifying this relationship using a much bigger sample. The results are clear: people who do eat more fruit and vegetables report a higher level of mental well-being and life satisfaction than those who eat less.” ANI quoted Howley, the head researcher, as saying.

The study also suggests that encouraging better dietary habits is not just only great for the physical health of a person in the long run but can also substantially improve the mental health of a person in the shorter term.

Fruits are rich sources of many essential nutrients like potassium, dietary fibre, vitamin C and Folic acid. Fruits also assist in maintaining healthy blood pressure.

The potassium present in fruits can also reduce the risk of heart diseases and strokes and the risk of developing kidney stones. It also decreases bone loss as a person ages. Fruits also ensure healthy hair growth and keep your skin fresh and bright.

Since fruits are rich in dietary fibre, they help in improving the functioning of the digestive tract, thereby reducing the chances of constipation and diverticulosis. Fruits are the best source to get energy without adding any unnecessary calories.

Including a significant amount of fruits in your diet can also help in losing weight. Once you add lots of fruits in your diet plan, you will see that your weight is being controlled and your health is improving.

It is always suggested to eat fresh and ripe fruits to get the maximum benefits from them.
